Dividing Land

Picture
Do you really understand adding and subtracting fractions? Students will brainstorm and write a narrative paragraph describing the problem and use the area model of fractions to solve the problem.

Problem: When Mrs. Lewis' township was founded, the land was divided into sections that could be farmed. Each section is a square that is 1 mile long on each side. There are 640 acres of land in a 1 square mile section.

The picture on lab sheet shows two adjacent sections of land, sections. Each section is divided among several owners. The picture shows the part of the land each person owns.

Question: What fraction of a section does each person own?

You will explore the question by working with a partner. You will have two days to complete the investigation.

What will I do?

  • Work with a partner
  • Re read the question
  • Create a plan for finding a strategy to answer the question
  • Write a Narrative explaining the question, how you approached the problem, and your results.
  • You should also include in your narrative, Do you feel the results are correct? What other method may be helpful? Why do you think you got the results that you got? What did you learn from your results?
  • How much of a section does each person own? What made it hard to think about naming the part of a section that each person owns?
  • You and your partner will discuss your findings with your classmates.
